Can You Complete All 8 Hours of NC General Contractor CE Online at Your Own Pace?

4 min read

If you're a North Carolina general contractor who needs continuing education but doesn't have time to sit through an all-day class, there's good news: You can complete all eight required hours of North Carolina general contractor continuing education (CE) online, at your own pace, without attending a live class.

The North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLBGC) permits approved self-paced online courses for both the two-hour mandatory requirement and the six hours of electives.

That means you can fit your required education around jobsite visits, inspections, client meetings, and the rest of your workday.

There's just one important distinction: The mandatory course and elective courses have different providers and enrollment arrangements.

How Do You Complete All 8 Hours Online?

For North Carolina general contractor licensees subject to the annual CE requirement, at least one qualifying individual must complete eight hours of Board-approved education.

Those hours are divided into two parts:

Requirement

Hours

Self-paced option

NCLBGC Mandatory Course

2

Yes, through the Board's designated online provider

Approved Elective Courses

6

Yes, through approved schools such as Skyline

Total

8

All online

You don't have to complete all eight hours on the same day, and you don't have to enroll in a live Zoom class.

With an approved self-paced course, you can complete the learning activities independently, without following a scheduled class meeting.

However, self-paced courses still have instructional-time requirements and completion deadlines. You must complete the required course components, and enrollment access is not unlimited.

Complete Your 6 Elective Hours With Skyline School

Skyline School (NCLBGC Provider #P00134) offers self-paced continuing education electives specifically designed for North Carolina general contractors.

You can choose from four courses:

Explore frequently cited construction safety violations and the standards that contractors should understand when managing worksite risks.

Learn about smart home technologies, connected building systems, and the opportunities and challenges that automation presents for construction professionals.

Explore the storm restoration industry, insurance-related projects, and the business considerations involved in repairing storm-damaged properties.

Examine ways to improve sales processes, customer communication, and business-development practices in a general contracting business.

You can satisfy your six-hour elective requirement by combining the four-hour Building Automation course with any one two-hour course. Alternatively, you can complete all three of Skyline's two-hour electives.

The cost? Just $125 for all six elective hours when you use code CEBUNDLE at checkout, compared with the regular combined price of $135.

Complete the 2-Hour Mandatory Course Online

The NCLBGC also permits the mandatory two-hour course to be completed through self-paced e-learning.

Unlike elective courses, however, the Board's self-paced mandatory course is offered exclusively through its designated provider, NCGC Training.

Skyline School provides a registration link and discount code for this course through our education partner.

The mandatory course normally costs $75, but Skyline students can use coupon code NCGC0134 to save $20, reducing the price to $55.

The mandatory course requires a separate registration and is completed through a different learning platform than Skyline's electives.

How Much Does It Cost to Complete All 8 Hours Online?

Using Skyline's current discounts, a North Carolina general contractor can complete the full eight-hour requirement for a combined $180.

The two portions are purchased separately, and both discount codes must be applied to receive the advertised combined price.

More importantly, you can complete the courses independently without giving up an entire workday to attend a scheduled class.

Don't Forget the November 30 Deadline

Although the classes are self-paced, North Carolina's annual continuing education deadline is not flexible.

All required CE hours for the 2027 license renewal must be completed by November 30, 2026.

The NCLBGC does not offer CE classes during December, and completing your education after the deadline can complicate your license renewal.

The Board's October 2026 newsletter also reminds contractors that finishing CE is only one part of the process. Once the hours are posted, the license must still be renewed through the Board's licensing portal.

If you still need your continuing education hours this year, enrolling now gives you more flexibility to work through the course requirements before the deadline.

Get Your General Contractor CE Done Without Rearranging Your Schedule

There's no reason to put your entire workday on hold just to complete your continuing education.

With Skyline School's self-paced online electives and the NCLBGC's online mandatory course, you can complete all eight hours without commuting to a classroom or attending scheduled webinars.

Choose the electives that interest you, complete the required instruction on your schedule, and finish before the November 30 deadline.

Your next project is waiting. Get your CE done.
