License Limitations and Classifications for General Contractors

As you are completing your license application at NCLBGC.org, you will need to make sure to select the appropriate license limitation that matches your business goals.  NCLBGC Licenses are sorted and determined by these limitations and classifications.

Limitations determine the dollar amount of the projects you may undertake.    For example, if you receive a bid for a million dollar project, but your license limitation is $500,000, you will not be able to legally take on that project.

Classifications determine the type of work that you are licensed to complete.  For example, if you receive a bid for a commercial project, but your license classification is for residential construction, you will not be able to legally accept that project.

The license limitations offered for general contractors in North Carolina are as follows:

  • Limited License Limitation: The Limited License Limitation allows contractors to accept individual projects that are less than or up to $500,000.  The application fee associated with a Limited License Limitation is $75.00.

  • Intermediate License Limitation: The Intermediate License Limitation allows contractors to accept individual projects that are less than or up to $1,000,000.  The application fee associated with an Intermediate License Limitation is $100.00.

  • Unlimited License Limitation:  The Unlimited License Limitation allows contractors to accept individual projects without any limits to the project amount.  The application fee associated with an Unlimited License Limitation is $125.00.

The license classifications offered for general contractors in North Carolina are as follows:

  • Residential Construction: As the name implies, this is a much more specialized classification for a general contractor that completes residential construction and demolition projects only.  This license can cover work from building residential wastewater systems to residential buildings.

  • Building Construction: This is a very broad classification, covering commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential construction and demolition.  This classification covers everything from grading pavement to building recreational facilities.

Required Exam for Residential Construction Contractor Licensure:

  • The North Carolina Residential Construction Builders Exam.  This exam is open-book, allowing the test-taker to reference approved materials whilst testing.
