The requirements for activating a license depend on how long the license has been inactive and whether or not the broker's CE record is up to date.
Your NC Real Estate License can be made inactive voluntarily or involuntarily. Here are some common reasons why your license may become inactive involuntarily:
Failure to complete 8 Hours of Continuing Education (Update & Elective) by June 10th each year following your initial license year.
Failure to complete 90 Hours of Post Licensing Education (Post 301, 302, 303) within in 18 months of being licensed.
Not being under the supervision of a BIC as a provisional broker. (Affiliating with a BIC will immediately reactivate your license)
Note: In order to reactivate your license it must be current. If you did not pay to renew your license by June 30th then you must first reinstate your expired license before activating it.
Inactive License with Up to Date CE
Commission Rule 58A.1703 says that if a broker's license is inactive and there is no continuing education (CE) deficiency, all they need to do is submit the License Activation/Affiliation Form (Form 2.08 – available online under Licensee Forms). This would be the case if you voluntarily decided to make your license inactive and now want to reactivate it.
License Inactive for Less Than 2 Years
If a broker's license has been inactive for less than two years and there is a CE deficiency, the broker must complete the current year's General Update course and one elective, then take either one or two more electives to make up the number of hours not taken in the previous license year (16-hour maximum). Then send form 2.08 back.
License Inactive for More Than 2 Years
If a broker's license has been inactive for more than 2 years and there is a CE deficiency, the broker must successfully complete two 30-hour Post licensing courses (courses must be completed within 6 months of submitting form 2.08), as well as the current year's General Update course and one elective course. [60 hours of Post licensing education plus 8 hours of CE equals 68 hours of education needed for activation.] The broker can complete any 2 of the 3 available Post Licensing Classes. Then send form 2.08 back.
