When and how do NC Real Estate Licenses Expire?

North Carolina Real Estate Licenses expire if you fail to pay your renewal fee by June 30th of each year. License expiration is independent of continuing education. The chart below will further illustrate the difference between license activation and expiration.

How to Get Your License Reinstated

Important Note: Reinstating your license after December 31st of the year that it expired will require additional education requirements in addition to paying fees.

Reinstatement of a license that has been expired for six months or less:

If your license has been expired for six month or less, you will need to complete the following requirements:

  1. Visit the Commission’s homepage at www.ncrec.gov

  2. Click on “Reinstate your License”

  3. Enter your license number and your PIN

  4. Your PIN will be the last four digits of your Social Security Number unless you have changed it in the past

  5. Complete and answer the required questions for license reinstatement

  6. Submit the $90 reinstatement fee

  7. Complete and submit License Activation/Affiliation form (REC 2.08)

Reinstatement of a license that has been expired for more than six months but less than two years:

If your license has been expired for more than six months, but less than two years, you will need to complete the following requirements:

  1. Complete and pass one 30-hour Post Licensing course

  2. This 30-hour Post Licensing course must be completed within six-months prior to submission of a reinstatement application

  3. Submit a reinstatement application

  4. Submission must include all required documentation, including the submission of an updated Federal criminal background report along with payment of the $90 application fee

  5. Complete and submit License Activation/Affiliation form (REC 2.08)

-OR-

  1. Submit a reinstatement application

  2. Submission must include all required documentation, including the submission of an updated Federal criminal background report along with payment of the $90 application fee

  3. Retake and pass both the National and State sections of the licensure exam

  4. Complete and submit License Activation/Affiliation form (REC 2.08)

Reinstatement of a license that has been expired for more than two years:

If your license has been expired for more than two years, you will need to complete the following requirements:

  1. Complete and pass the 75-hour NC Broker Pre Licensing course

  2. Submit a license application

  3. Submission must include all required documentation, including the submission of an updated Federal criminal background report, and payment of the $100 original application fee

  4. Retake and pass both the National and State sections of the licensure exam

Completion of these requirements will grant you provisional broker status. To reobtain full active license status, you will then need to complete the following:

  1. Complete and pass the 90-hour Post Licensing courses

  2. Complete and submit License Activation/Affiliation form (REC 2.08)
